    • Turkeys were seen at Hidden Pond, Upper Springs, Turkey Hollow and Fossil Ridge and wouldn't you know it; I missed the first sighting of baby turkeys on Upper Springs! I have been waiting patiently for that and just missed it! Oh, well, I'm so glad everyone else got to see them! Bears at Upper Springs, Dogwood Mountain, Hidden Pond and Lost Field. Deer were at all 8 cameras at one time or other this weekend and Squirrels were at all cameras except Bird Point. Hmmm...I wonder why we never see squirrels at Bird Point. Friday evening at Bird Point we had deer grazing, Momma Raccoon and her 5 babies were digging in the edge of the water all up and down the bank, a Great Blue Heron was walking around the edge of the water searching for something to eat, Momma Duck and her 6 or 7 babies were out on the point eating bugs, and a Beaver was on the bank eating grass, I believe, and while watching the beaver a fish jumped up out of the water in front of him! I love watching Bird Point in the evenings!

Our guys were out doing routine maintenance on some of the cameras this weekend and they found a Timber Rattler at Hidden Pond! They were even able to measure him before he took off to parts unknown and he was 4 ft 6 inches; okay, he's not Monty but still pretty impressive!

    • I didn't get to see it but it looks like there were a couple of foxes out in the wee hours of the morning; one was on Upper Springs and one on Hidden Pond along with raccoons on both cameras. There were raccoons on several cameras and a cottontail rabbit on Fossil Ridge. We had no service first thing when we usually come on because of complications from the storm but we were back on and running before 8:00 am. It was absolutely pouring rain by then but the Wood Ducks seemed to be enjoying it on Bird Point; they were all over the point eating worms or something. The deer were peeking out of the woods at Deer Run but not coming out! They didn't want to get in the middle of that storm, it seemed! The rain seemed to quit or at least slow down by a little after 8 and there were a couple of gorgeous bucks and a doe on Hidden Pond with a Blue Jay and a bunch of crows. A little later the Blue Jay and a Red-bellied Woodpecker were on the ground eating together. A coyote found something to eat on Lost Field this morning around 9:00. I don't know what it was but he was finding little tasty bits of morsels all over the far end of the field and couldn't make up his mind which one he liked best! He was back and forth the whole time he was out there! I don't even want to think about what he might have been eating but he hung around for 45 minutes eating whatever it was! At about 10:00am on Hidden Pond we had a couple of Mourning Doves, a Blue Jay flying back and forth from the trees to the feeder, Wood Ducks sitting on limbs in the trees, swimming in the pond and mingling with the other animals on the ground, six deer in the edge of the woods and at the feeder, several squirrels here and there and over a dozen turkeys spread out all over the place! By around 10:45, they had thinned out and a couple of bucks joined them; one was a 10 pt and the other a 12 pt. Dogwood Mountain had a huge bear for a while in the afternoon; don't know if it was Big Ben or not but he was big! A bear cub on Lost Field started walking into the field, looking at something and then he began to go faster! At closer inspection, he was chasing an armadillo!!  Laughing

    • All is back online now. Uplink provider engineers confirmed storm related issue with one of the many towers that provide connectivity from the reserve to civilization. The issue has been bypassed and live streaming is now back online.

      Thank you for your patience.

    • Today's birds were Titmice, Blue Jays, Eastern Meadowlark, Indigo Bunting, Brown-headed Cowbirds, Carolina Wren, White-eyed Vireo, Phoebe, White-breasted Nuthatch, Northern Cardinal, Blue Grosbeak, Red-winged Blackbirds, American Crows, and of course Wood Ducks.

A doe and two fawns were grazing at the end of the field at Fossil Ridge while one of the bear cubs was sitting on a big rock and eating a good breakfast on Dogwood Mountain. Also on Dogwood Mountain I saw a really pretty yellow bird for about 1-2 seconds and it wasn't really close so I couldn't identify; possibly a Goldfinch and then a little brown bird was taking a twig under a rock! Surprised Are there any birds that nest under rocks or maybe just look for food under them?? There were five turkeys running around at Hidden Pond, a bear cub on Fossil Ridge and then another one showed up at Dogwood Mountain. Butterflies were showing up all over the place! The bear cubs were in and out several times today at Hidden Pond, Upper Springs and Dogwood Mountain; every time we thought they were gone, we would check just minutes later and there they were again! LaughingWooHoo!! We had a Timber Rattler under the feeder at Hidden Pond this afternoon at 6:45! Don't know how long he was under there but there was a bear cub there at the same time! The bear stayed for a very long time and the snake was still there when we got off the cameras! Hope he's still there in the morning! It was getting pretty close to 8:30 in the evening and we had 2-6 pt. bucks, a doe, a fawn and an armadillo all on Turkey Hollow!

    • The cameras were down for a few minutes due to a really bad storm this morning but we were back on by 8:30. The animals were a bit scarce at that time because it was raining so hard but it wasn't long before they started showing up. We had some young wood ducks on Bird Point and there was another duck there as well that I'm not sure about. A little later we watched as Momma Wood Duck brought out the babies for a swim in the lake and a walk on the point before going back towards their little hideout. I saw what I thought was a beaver but found out it was a very big Muskrat! He would go up on land and get some grass or flowers and then run back and sit in the edge of the water to eat it!

Deer Run had an Armadillo in the wee hours of the morning and then again in the afternoon! There were bears on Upper Springs and Lost Field for a while this morning. Several Turkey Vultures were also on Lost Field and at 1:45 this afternoon, in the pouring rain, the smaller Momma Bear and cubs showed up for lunch! Actually I only saw one cub, at first; guess the others didn't want to brave the rain for a bite to eat but they did finally venture out for a second or two! Upper Springs had 2 Pileated Woodpeckers for awhile this afternoon! The turkeys were back at Turkey Hollow again today even in the rain! The bear cubs were in and out all evening on Hidden Pond and Upper Springs. They just couldn't make up their minds whether they were finished eating or not! I hope everyone got a chance to see Bird Point this evening! It was amazing; we had deer grazing on the point right along side a raccoon family, crows and Wood Ducks! Absolutely beautiful!

Today's birds were Summer (Tanager) Piranga, Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, Mourning Doves, Phoebe, Downy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, White-eyed Vireo, Northern Cardinal, Blue Jays, American Crows, Red-winged Blackbird, Carolina Wren, Purple Martins, Titmice, Green Heron and of course the Wood Ducks; lots and lots of Wood Ducks!

    • A coyote made a quick dash through Turkey Hollow early this morning and then later there were three turkey gobblers; we watched them slowly coming up the field towards the feeder. Deer were laying in the field and some walking around, grazing. One of the bear cubs showed up at Upper Springs and was enjoying his breakfast but it was storming and the thunder was really loud and kept scaring him! He was very restless and didn't stay too long after that. The next big thunder and he took off running. He stopped and looked around and then he was gone. Bless his little heart, he's still just a baby and he needed his Momma right then! A little later 3 turkey hens showed up, pecked around on the ground a little bit and then shortly after just took off. The 3 gobblers came back to Turkey Hollow after that and were walking around in the field and about 9:23 a Bobcat came trotting into view! At first I thought he was going to go after the turkeys but he changed his mind and took off towards the trees and was gone! The turkeys just stood there and watched him go and probably breathed a sigh of relief that he was gone! Deer were in and out all morning. Around 9:55 four turkey hens showed up and headed straight to the feeder so the three gobblers hightailed it after them! After awhile three of them were off by themselves and for a couple minutes they would run a couple steps and jump straight up into the air with their wings spread out! It was hilarious! There were also turkeys on Hidden Pond, Upper Springs and Fossil Ridge this morning! They must like the rainy weather. The gobblers on Turkey Hollow started strutting at 11:00 this morning; I guess spending all that time with the hens and they finally started showing off for them! At 11:35, Shaggy, the big Momma Bear and her 3 cubs showed up at Dogwood Mountain!  One of the cubs was sitting in the feeder with his little leg hanging down and his Momma was sitting on the ground right beside him and every time she'd lean in closer to him he'd put his foot on her back and push. Hehe; he was a cutie! Another one was hiding under the feeder; for a long time I thought there were only 2 cubs! I was wondering earlier when the bears were going to start making appearances but when they started showing up, they all came at once. We had bears at Dogwood Mountain, Fossil Ridge and Upper Springs all at the same time! They were in and out of Fossil Ridge and Upper Springs several times today and the showed up at Hidden Pond and Lost Field also! Wow; that's a first: an Armadillo was seen at Deer Run also the Opossum was back at Upper Springs again!

Today's birds seen or heard were Carolina Wren, Mourning Doves, Northern Cardinals, American Crows, Common Yellowthroat, Indigo Buntings, Red-winged Blackbird, Blue Grosbeak, Blue Jay, Field Sparrow, Kingfishers and Pileated Woodpeckers.

      YOU WILL SEE ACTION!!! GUARANTEED!!!

Raccoons and Deer were seen at all 8 cameras at some time this weekend! Squirrels were seen at all cameras except Bird Point, and Bears were seen at all except Deer Run and Bird Point which means that someone spotted bears on Turkey Hollow!!! It was a Momma Bear with 3 cubs: now that's a first and very exciting but according to TR they didn't stay long. Turkeys were spotted on Turkey Hollow, Upper Springs and Hidden Pond and both a coyote and rabbit were seen on Fossil Ridge! The Wood Ducks were out at Bird Point and at Hidden Pond; I love that they're coming around more again! I guess no snakes were spotted this weekend but there are a lot of people watching and waiting for our next sighting; including me! It seems one of the bears on Hidden Pond decided he'd take a little nap after getting his fill. He lay down on the ground between the feeder and the pond! They do give us a good show sometimes!

    • In the morning we had the usual deer, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels and then a bear entered Lost Field. Shortly after that one entered Fossil Ridge and within a few short minutes one also entered Hidden Pond so at 9:45 am we had 3 bears at three different cameras! On Fossil Ridge there was a doe at the feeder, eating when to the left one of the bear cubs slowly walked in and headed towards the feeder. He didn't see the doe and she didn't see him until he was almost to the feeder and I don't know if she saw, heard, sensed or smelled him but she took off like a flash and never looked back. The bear just lay down and started eating. A little bit later he took off and a coyote ran through; didn't stop, just ran through! There was a bear cub on Upper Springs and he was there a while before something really scared him and he was gone! I could find no traces of him so I started looking for what scared him and a HUGE bear came slowly sauntering in, stopped at a tree and had a look around and moseyed on up to the feeder. Yup, you may have guessed it, he was Big Ben and he was such a gorgeous creature! He made an appearance not once but twice today; he came back this evening too! While watching him Momma Bear and her 3 rambunctious cubs made their appearance on Dogwood Mountain! Later, on Hidden Pond, one of the cubs had come in and was eating but decided he was going to take a swim! He was so funny; he was swimming and eating cattails and just having a good time! Bears, bears everywhere!!!

Another (or the same) coyote came into Fossil Ridge again but was only there a couple minutes. Turkeys were at Turkey Hollow most of the day and at the bird feeder we saw a new bird. Don't know what it was yet but will try to find out and I'll post photos of him. One of the Momma Wood Ducks had her 5 babies out at Bird Point in the evening again. They were running around, eating bugs, swimming and then took a nice little rest on the bank before they swam back they way they came. There were several raccoons playing in the water over by the beaver lodge for a few minutes and just a little bit later one beaver was out swimming around and another one was out on the bank.

    • I can't believe Momma Bear had her 3 little babies out at 12:05 this morning! She should have had those babies home in bed but no, there they were at Upper Springs just after midnight! Frown In the wee hours of the morning at several different cameras we had lots of raccoons, deer and a lone opossum who was also made his appearance at Upper Springs!

At 6:40 this morning a huge bear came in to Hidden Pond for breakfast. I believe this is the one that was there yesterday but not sure. He left at 7:10 but first went down to the pond, for a drink, I guess and when he did several ducks flew. They're getting pretty numerous again which is great! Then at Lost Field around 7:18 one of the bear cubs meandered in and had a little breakfast before he took off running towards the woods again! A lone doe was at Hidden Pond for a very long time this morning but she kept spooking back into the trees. I believe all the ducks might have been startling her or the many squirrels; who knows! Two bucks and a doe were on the point at Bird Point later this morning; looked as if they were checking out all the ducks but they didn't stay long. A short time later two turkeys came in and slowly made their way completely around the point, eating as they went before going behind the camera.

Whoa; Surprised you won't believe what one of those cubs did this evening! He took off running when a big bear came into Hidden Pond but he only went a little ways and stopped; then he finally just went back to the opposite side of the feeder, lay down and started eating with the big bear eating on the other side!! The little cub likes to live dangerously but all is well; they went their separate ways without even a single fight!
